Therefore by the time you reach the bottom unit (#3) you’re on the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th highest paying keywords for your content so unless you’re talking about lawyers or revolutionary pharmaceutical companies then you’re CPC (cost per click) is going to be tiny.

Tiny CPC = Tiny ProfitSimple formula really. If you’ve built your website so that the most-clicked ad unit is not the first/only unit on the page then you’re missing out.

How much difference it makesI can’t screenshot my Adsense, nor can I be specific about my current figures, but I can give you a very generalised idea. On this site I have two units – the one at the top of the page has an average page eCPM of more than 5x than that of the unit just above the comments.

To put that in very real terms, if received 4 clicks to the top unit – that would roughly equate to .50. 4 clicks to my bottom unit equates to around .50. Quite a big difference? Imagine if I had 400 clicks on each – not quite so small now is it?

So there you have it. If one of your Adsense units is getting significantly more clicks than the other one but is below it (in terms of page order); then you should seriously consider either moving the under-performing unit to somewhere underneath the good one, or remove it entirely. January has to be about the worst month for any kind of business, except weight loss. Building a Google Adsense business is no exception to this rule. I was shocked when my Adsense revenues went from several dollars per day to just pennies per day in the first couple of weeks in January. I was getting pretty worried about it until I started to think about the logic behind it:

Adsense and Adwords revenue is generated from companies advertising their products through Google and consumers clicking on those ads.

From a company’s advertising perspective, most of their sales are made in November and December. Those are the months that make or break their profits for the year, and those are the months that the majority of their advertising budget is spent. January is one of the worst months of the year for sales, which logically would result in the companies spending much less on advertising.

Google charges for and displays ads based on the highest paying and highest quality ads given the best exposure. With the month of January having much fewer companies spending money on advertising, lesser quality and lesser paying ads are displayed. This pretty much guarantees much lower paychecks for those who make money from Adsense on their websites.

From a consumer’s point of view, what entices them to click on an Adsense ad is the product of the ad being something they are looking for, and the ad being high quality advertising, thus enticing them to take a closer look.

The problem with January is that consumers, as a whole, are not in a buying mood. Most of their money was spent in November and December, leaving them with empty pockets for the month of January. With this in mind, even the high quality and alluring ads are not as likely to be clicked on, as the products are not something the consumers are looking for at that time. This, combined with less competition amongst the advertisers bringing lesser quality ads, results in a much lower click through rate on the ads displayed on Google Adsense websites.

I was happy to see my Adsense profits rising back to their normal levels by the middle of January. By the end of the month, I just barely passed the hundred dollar mark, guaranteeing me a cheque in January. All in all, I have found that an online business is still subject to the same trends a brick and mortar business experiences. That’s what I want to talk to you about today. A lot of people try and find on the Internet places where they can buy or get hold of the highest-paying AdSense keywords. The idea is that if you have the right keywords you can actually generate dollars per click. Rather than being paid just a few cents per click from your AdSense ads, if you use the right keywords you can actually generate several dollars per click.

Now a lot of people are advertising for these types of services and these types of high-paying AdSense keyword lists, but do they really work? Well I’ve tried a lot of them out and some of them are better than others. There are free lists out there and, obviously, in this life you get what you pay for. The free lists generally aren’t worth anything at all and really aren’t worth investing your time in.

Some of the paid lists are quite useful. What you should remember though, is that on top of getting the keyword lists you need to actually create the content that includes these keywords on your website.
